‘The Lion King’ Reboot is in the Works
‘The Lion King’ is officially going to be made into a live action movie. ‘The Lion King is one of the Disney Studio’s biggest animated films, so the fan base of the animated version is quite large. The animated 1994 movie has made $968.8 million dollars globally. After all of the successful remakes lately that Disney has turned out in recent years, it is not surprising that they decided to go ahead with doing a live action remake of ‘The Lion King’.
The film is going to be directed by the director Jon Favreau. He directed the successful ‘The Jungle Book’ live action remake -which made $965.8 million this year- and the first two movies in the ‘Iron Man’ trilogy for the Disney Studio in the past. All of his films for Disney have turned out massive success at the box office. Similarly to his contemporaries Peter Jackson and Kenneth Branagh, Jon Favreau is one of the greats when it comes to working with computer generated effects in his films and still keeping the film story fully accessible and the actors fully engaging and comfortable in their surroundings even when they may be speaking to a green screen or a creature and person that is not physically there. Jon Favreau started his directing career by filming indie films on shoe string budgets, so he is also very good at knowing how to manage a film budget wisely. Even more recently he has done a few indie releases -like the acclaimed movie ‘Chef’- with small budgets that he managed carefully. Since the original ‘The Lion King’ does not have any human characters, it may be that the live action remake will require expensive CGI characters or real animals in Africa during filming. It is an ambitious plan, and it does require a director with considerable experience with using CGI, the ability to direct voice actors to visualize what the scenes will be and to handle the film budget appropriately. Based on his past experience, Jon Favreau is certainly the right director to helm the project for Disney.
Right now very little is known about the remake, as it was just announced September 28, 2016. Disney Studios has stated that the remake of ‘The Lion King’ will use a few of the songs from the animated film, just as their new live action version of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ will use some of the songs from the original Disney movie. The release date has not been confirmed yet, so you will have to wait likely a year or two until the film will come to a cinema in your area. Jon Favreau additionally has a sequel to ‘The Jungle Book’ in the works, so audiences have much to look forward to from the director in the next few years.
