The mystery surrounding the role Blige will play in the upcoming season is about as deep as the plot itself at this point, as producers are keeping details about the new season under tight wraps. What we do know is that there’s a new mystery brewing, and lead actress Viola Davis has said that “it’s going to be presented very quickly in the first episode.”
Season 2 of How to Get Away with Murder ended with quite a few surprises, and Season 3 is promising to follow in its footsteps. A recent Entertainment Weekly exclusive promo video reveals that main character Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) is soon to be faced with an unknown stalker who is bent on destroying her reputation, plastering pictures of her all around campus with the word “killer” written in red under them. A real killer is also on the loose, and someone is bound to get hurt. How Blige’s character will play into all of this is still up for debate, but no doubt she’ll be caught up in the excitement early on.

Blige’s career is a multi-faceted one. Though undoubtedly an unrivaled singer/songwriter (she has been the recipient of nine Grammy Awards and a nominee of 30), the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” is also known as a model, a record producer, and an actress. Her first appearance in the acting world occurred back in 1995 when she played the role of herself in the police drama series New York Undercover, where she sang on set in the café owned by the character known as Natalie. However, her first real acting role didn’t come until 1998, where she played the role of Ola Mae, a preacher’s daughter who dreams of singing more than just gospel, in The Jamie Foxx Show.

Though previously her career centered around her role as a singer and songwriter, Blige has started focusing more on acting as of late. Her recent appearances include Platinum Fro in Black Nativity (2013); Angie in Episode 10, Season 1 of Empire (2015); Evillene in The Wiz Live! (2015), a role which earned her a nomination for the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series; and, recently, she finished playing a role in the Dee Rees-directed drama Mudbound, which is set to come out in 2017.

How to Get Away with Murder’s Episode 1, Season 3 will premiere Thursday, September 22 at 10:00PM EST on ABC.
