Leonardo DiCaprio Snaps a Selfie with a Young Fan at the U.S. Open
Ever the charitable guy, Leonardo DiCaprio was recently spotted taking a selfie with a young fan at the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Sunday, September 11. The Revenant Oscar winner was enjoying watching the men’s final from a private suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium when a young girl in the next suite over tapped him on the shoulder and asked him to take a photo with her. The star happily obliged and even let her check the photo to make sure that she approved. He really made that little girl’s day! DiCaprio’s current girlfriend, supermodel Nina Agdal, was not in attendance, but it is unlikely that she would have minded her man taking the time to pose with a young fan.
DiCaprio’s Other Charitable Efforts
The actor was at the U.S. Open taking a much needed break from his busy schedule. Just before the tournament, DiCaprio was in Canada for the Toronto Film Festival. He was there to promote his documentary, Before the Flood. The film chronicles the effects of climate change in an effort to raise public awareness of this growing issue. After the U.S. Open, DiCaprio would be off to Washington DC for the Our Ocean Conference where he, alongside President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, would lead discussions about the effects of climate change on the world’s oceans. This is a cause that has always been close to DiCaprio’s heart, and it is inspiring to see him taking action for this important cause.
Inspiration from the Pros at the U.S. Open
The U.S. Open is one of the oldest professional tennis tournaments in the world. Running since 1987, it is the last stop on the Grand Slam tour, following the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. This annual two-week tournament pits the best of the best from the tennis world against each other to take home the trophy, featuring players from around the globe. Played each year at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, the tournament features five championships: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There are tournaments for seniors, juniors and those in wheelchairs as well.
At this year’s championship, Stan Wawrinka bested Novak Djokovic to take home the men’s singles title. In the men’s doubles final match, Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares beat out Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for the title. On the women’s side, Karolina Pliskova fell to Angelique Kerber to win the singles crown. For doubles, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova claimed victory over Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. In the mixed doubles championship, it was Laura Siegemund and Mate Pavic who won the trophy over Coco Vandeweghe and Rajeev Ram.
After a tournament with plenty of upsets, it is certain to be an event that tennis fans all over the world will remember for years to come, especially DiCaprio’s young selfie partner!
